LTER Network Office History

1980

  • Initial LTER sites funded.

1983

  • Coordination grant awarded to Oregon State University (Jerry Franklin, PI).
  • The LTER Network Office is established.

1985

  • First LTER All Scientists Meeting held at Lake Itasca, MN.

1989

  • Coordination grant is awarded to University of Washington-Seattle (Jerry Franklin, PI).
  • The LTER Network Office enlarged and established on the University of Washington campus, in the College of Forest Resources.
  • A Network Data Manager is hired and a Network-wide electronic mail forwarding system is developed.
  • The LTER personnel database from NSF is incorporated.
  • The Network Office hires Program Assistant for meeting and travel coordination (replaced Administrative Assistant position).

1990

  • The Network Office hires John Vande Castle as Network
    Manager and acquisition of satellite imagery and aerial photography for
    all sites begins.
  • The Network Office creates Publications/Public Information Coordinator position.
  • An LTER Core Data Set Catalog is developed and published.
  • The
    LTER Network Office establishes the LTER Geographic Information
    Systems/Remote Sensing Laboratory at University of Washington-Seattle.
  • Second LTER All Scientists Meeting held, Estes Park CO.

1991

  • The Network Office creates a Communications System Analyst position.

1993

  • The LTER Network Internet (gopher) server is established at Network Office.
  • The LTER All-Site Bibliography is developed and put online in searchable form.
  • The LTER Core Data Set Catalog is put online in searchable form.
  • The LTER Personnel Database is put online in searchable form.
  • Third LTER All Scientists Meeting held, Estes Park CO.

1994

  • The LTER Network World Wide Web site is established at the Network Office.

1995

  • NSF announces an open competition for the LTER Network Office cooperative agreement.

1997

  • LTER Network Office Cooperative Agreement awarded to the University of New Mexico.
  • March 15: The Network Office officially begins operating from the University of New Mexico:
  • Robert Waide- P.I.
  • John Vande Castle- Co P.I.
  • James Brunt- Co P.I.
  • NSF posts an International Programs Officer, Christine French, at the Network Office.

1999

2000

  • Fourth LTER All Scientists Meeting held, Snowbird UT.

2001

  • The NSF commissions a 20-Year-Review of the LTER Network (October, Albuquerque).

2003

  • LNO Cooperative Agreement to the University of New Mexico renewed for six years.
  • Fifth LTER All Scientists Meeting held, Seattle WA.

 2004

  • The Network Office moves into new offices on the University of New Mexico campus.

2006

  • Sixth LTER All Scientists Meeting held, Estes Park CO.
