Data Archive

LNO provides a limited data archive for satellite data, orphaned data, and other data by request. Data are registered in the LTER Metacat data catalog and stored on LNO servers accessible via web and ftp.

Database Design and Construction

LNO can provide database design consulting and limited construction assistance for site and synthesis working group databases.

Database Hosting

LNO hosts databases for sites and synthesis projects on network accessible mysql, postgressql, and ms-sql servers.

Domain Name Services

LNO in coordination with the University of New Mexico can host project domain names, and sub-domains for sites and synthesis projects.

Information Management Training

LNO provides training in all aspects of information management to site information managers based on needs and requests forwarded from the LTER Information Management Committee. LNO can put together custom curricula or use "canned" curricula developed for previous national and international trainings.

LTER Network Kiosk

LNO can deploy and man the LTER Network Kiosk at society meetings and special events on a limited basis. The kiosk is currently sent to the Ecological Society of America (ESA) annual summer meeting, the SACNAS annual meeting, and the LTER triennial All-Scientist Meetings.

LTER Web Presence (WWW.LTERNET.EDU)

LNO maintains the LTER Network Web presence at www.lternet.edu which is the public web site for LTER. The site provides information about LTER and LTER sites for the general audience and for non-LTER scientists. Included in this information is the LTER site-of-the-month - rotating information about current research at LTER sites.

Mailing Lists

LNO maintains a mailing list server which allows members of the LTER Network community to have electronic discussion groups. LNO supports group mailing lists for all standing committees, ad-hoc committees, topical interest groups, and synthesis working groups that request. These lists are all of the form "groupname"@LTERnet.edu. These lists are restricted and protected from UBE (unwanted bulk email) and malware by spam and virus scanners. Lists can be configured to keep archives, which are backed up and accessible for the life of the list. Lists can also be public or private.

Meeting Logistics

LNO provides logistical arrangements for LTER committee meetings, synthesis working groups, and other special events. These include travel, lodging, local transportation, and catering.

Meeting Technology

LNO can provide necessary infrastructure for successful meetings. These include LCD projectors, Video Conferencing Capability, Wireless Internet.

Network Bibliography

The LNO maintains the LTER Network Bibliography. Information on all LTER site publications is curated in a common database format. Site publication information can be maintained at LNO or used as a collection point for other site bibliography systems. Sites can enter individual publications or can upload complete databases in the required format. LNO assistance is available.

Network Climate and Hyrdology Databases

The LTER Network climate and hyrdology databases (ClimDB and HydroDB) are currently maintained and hosted at Andrews LTER at Oregon State University.
LNO is working with Andrews LTER to migrate these database to LNO Summer of 2008. Following this migration there will be a graded shift of maintenance from Andrews LTER to LNO over 2009. Sites can update their climate and hydrology data via open harvest.

Network Data Catalog

LNO maintains the LTER Network data catalog in a Metacat server. This server is mirrored at NCEAS and uses community developed software. The LNO metacat contains metadata documents describing LTER site datasets and is available at http://metacat.lternet.edu. Metadata documents are maintained via an open harvest mechanism that is updated by site information managers.

Network Document Archive

LNO maintains the LTER Network Document Archive which contains historical electronic and paper documents. Electronic documents can be searched via the intranet. New submissions are verified and curated by LNO staff. In most cases the document archive contains final documents - there are special cases where significant changes have been made in "final documents" for particular audiences in this case these new versions are also stored.

Network LDAP Server

LNO supports and maintain an LTER Network LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) server to provide authentication services for web and database applications. The LDAP provides secure SSHA encrypted password access for network applications. The LDAP is maintained via personnel database forms and permissions.

Newsletters

The LNO publishes the LTER Network News twice yearly as an informal news and information publication for LTER scientists and interested parties. Contributions are requested 3-6 months in advance.

Personal Email Aliases

LNO maintains email aliases for individuals in the LTER Network. These aliases are of the form "username"@LTERnet.edu. These aliases are protected from UBE (unwanted bulk email) and malware by spam and virus filters.

Personnel Database

LNO maintains the LTER personnel database. The database is web-accessible and provides contact information for LTER scientists, staff, and students. Additions, updates, and deletions to this database can be made by individuals, information managers, and LNO staff.

Site Brochures

LNO helps sites with design, layout, and distribution of site research brochures. These informative brochures can be used for informational outreach to scientists, students, administrators, and the public.

Site Characteristics Database

LNO maintains the LTER site characteristics database. Information is kept about site location, research direction, and contact information. The information is used to make site web pages in a common format available on the www.lternet.edu/sites page and to produce lists of commonly requested parameters like lat long and contact lists. The database can be updated by LNO or by information mangaers through web-accessible forms.

Spam and Virus Protection

LNO maintains SPAM (UBE - Unwanted Bulk Email) and Malware (virus, trojan horse, etc.) protection on all incoming and outgoing email including all mailing lists, aliases, and webmail accounts. LNO uses ClamAV and SpamAssasin - both open-source applications.

Synthesis Working Groups

Training and Workshop Computer Lab

LNO maintains a modern 20-station computer training lab that can be used for IT training and synthesis workshops.

Video Teleconferencing Support

LNO can host and facilitate video teleconferences via polycom or like technology on standard protocols for committees and working groups. LNO and UNM maintain a 48 port teleconferencing bridge that can support simultaneous multi-site meetings.

Virtual Server Hosting

LNO hosts virtual servers through the VMware Server platform and can provide virtual servers to sites requesting such services. The host system is a Dell PowerEdge 2950 Quad-core with 16Gb of memory and 1.2Tb of RAID-5 storage. Virtual servers can be almost any flavor of operating system, and each instance is backed-up on a daily basis.

Web Site Hosting

LNO can provide hosted web infrastructure for site home pages and special events. LNO supports a "LAMP" architecture and a limited selection of content management options.

Webmail

LNO maintains a web browser based email client for LNO staff and individuals in the network that request it. The client is an open-source IMAP client.

Website Design and Construction

LNO can provide professional consulting services on website design and limited construction aid for site websites.
