Service Types - Database Support
Network Bibliography
The LNO maintains the LTER Network Bibliography. Information on all LTER site publications is curated in a common database format. Site publication information can be maintained at LNO or used as a collection point for other site bibliography systems. Sites can enter individual publications or can upload complete databases in the required format. LNO assistance is available.
Network Climate and Hyrdology Databases
The LTER Network climate and hyrdology databases (ClimDB and HydroDB) are currently maintained and hosted at Andrews LTER at Oregon State University.
LNO is working with Andrews LTER to migrate these database to LNO Summer of 2008. Following this migration there will be a graded shift of maintenance from Andrews LTER to LNO over 2009. Sites can update their climate and hydrology data via open harvest.
Network Data Catalog
LNO maintains the LTER Network data catalog in a Metacat server. This server is mirrored at NCEAS and uses community developed software. The LNO metacat contains metadata documents describing LTER site datasets and is available at http://metacat.lternet.edu. Metadata documents are maintained via an open harvest mechanism that is updated by site information managers.
Network Document Archive
LNO maintains the LTER Network Document Archive which contains historical electronic and paper documents. Electronic documents can be searched via the intranet. New submissions are verified and curated by LNO staff. In most cases the document archive contains final documents - there are special cases where significant changes have been made in "final documents" for particular audiences in this case these new versions are also stored.
Network LDAP Server
LNO supports and maintain an LTER Network LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) server to provide authentication services for web and database applications. The LDAP provides secure SSHA encrypted password access for network applications. The LDAP is maintained via personnel database forms and permissions.
Personnel Database
LNO maintains the LTER personnel database. The database is web-accessible and provides contact information for LTER scientists, staff, and students. Additions, updates, and deletions to this database can be made by individuals, information managers, and LNO staff.
Site Characteristics Database
LNO maintains the LTER site characteristics database. Information is kept about site location, research direction, and contact information. The information is used to make site web pages in a common format available on the www.lternet.edu/sites page and to produce lists of commonly requested parameters like lat long and contact lists. The database can be updated by LNO or by information mangaers through web-accessible forms.
